We offer courses in three categories:

  • Chinese Philosophy.
  • Western Philosophy.
  • Applied Philosophy and Cultural Philosophy.

Our courses focus on Western and Asian thought, while also exploring cultural issues and the various interactions between philosophy and society.

Undergraduate program

  • The professional train is emphasized:
    We consider Asian philosophy, Western philosophy, Cultural philosophy, and Applied philosophy to be equally important.
  • Help students to pursue higher degrees:
    In the junior and senior years, some courses are designed for practicing philosophical writings and topic discussions. Such experience is helpful in gaining acceptance into graduate schools. In addition, we have a 5-year program for achieving both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
  • Placements:
    We can also help those who want to enter the job market after graduation. To maximize the likelihood of securing an excellent job, students are encouraged to choose a minor or even take double majors. Furthermore, we offer media and education programmes, which are both very useful in the pursuit of a satisfying career.
  • Student advisors:
    Each student is assigned a professor as an advisor, and over the 4 years the advisor is not changed. In our department, students and their advisors enjoy exceptionally positive relationships.
  • Requirements:
    Mandatory courses: History of Chinese Philosophy (1,2,3,4), History of Western Philosophy (1,2,3,4), Introduction to Philosophy (1,2), Introduction to Buddhism (1,2), Logic (1,2), Epistemology (1,2), Ethics (1,2), Neo-Confucianism (1,2), Metaphysics (1,2), Thesis (1,2), Campus Service (I, II), The Enlightenment of Chinese Culture, Wonderful Wisdom and Life, Professional Ethics, Civil Education for Legal Society, Area of Humanities: History and Reflection (2 credits), Area of Traditional Art (2 credits), Area of Social Sciences (2 credits), Area of Natural Sciences (2 credits), English Reading(1,2), English Listening (1,2), English (3, 4), Second Foreign Language (1,2), Military Training (1,2), Physical Education (1,2,3,4,5,6).
    The total of mandatory credits is 84. The minimum credits for departmental elective courses is 42. Other elective courses (from other departments) are 10 credits. The minimum total of credits for graduation is 136.

Graduate program

  • Chinese Philosophy, Western Philosophy and Philosophy of Culture:
    We consider both Asian philosophy and Western philosophy important, and also encourage students to focus on Cultural philosophy.
  • Philosophical writing:
    Presenting papers at conferences and writing a high quality Masters thesis are both necessary for graduation.
  • Speeches:
    There are 20 invited speakers per year, to help broaden our range of knowledge.
  • Course Requirements:
    Mandatory courses (16 credits): Buddhist Enlightenment Education, Seminar on Basic Philosophical Problems (I, II), Seminar on English Philosophical Writings (I, II), Thesis (I, II). The minimum credits for elective courses is 16. Total graduation credits are 32.
